A Case of Considerable Interest An exhibition celebrating the 35 th anniversary of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection of the Toronto Public Library “Well, my boy, what do you think of this lot?” he asked, smiling at my expression. “It is a curious collection.” “Very curious, and the story that hangs round it will strike you as being more curious still.” - Sherlock Holmes to Dr. Watson in “The Musgrave ritual” by Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is best known for his detective stories about Sherlock Holmes, but he was also the author of many other works and one of the best known public figures of the late Victorian age. A Case of Considerable Interest presents some of the unique and varied items housed in the Toronto Public Library’s Arthur Conan Doyle Collection, an amazing collection devoted to the life and works of Conan Doyle and to the publishing phenomenon that is Sherlock Holmes. The first part of the exhibit features just a few of the many published works of Arthur Conan Doyle. The second part offers a glimpse into the world of Sherlock Holmes, with rare editions of the original detective stories and a sample of the many adaptations and new tales that they have inspired. The third section reveals a Canadian connection, with items about Arthur Conan Doyle’s four visits to Canada. To enter the virtual exhibit, click the above links or explore the bookcase to your left using your mouse. If you’re in Toronto, please also visit the Arthur Conan Doyle Room on the 5th Floor of the Toronto Reference Library, where you can pull up a comfortable chair and read some of the works shown here. The room is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, or by appointment.
