DIGITAL COLLECTIONS About the Collection The Kornhauser Health Sciences Library History Collections house a valuable body of historical manuscripts documenting the evolution of medical training and health care practices in Kentucky during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the history of medical and health sciences schools in Louisville and the surrounding region. It is made up of several collections held by the library. Materials include class photographs and related images associated with the Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing, University of Louisville School of Dentistry, and University of Louisville School of Medicine, as well as early medical school catalogs listing students for each session. Kornhauser Health Sciences Library has a rich history of supporting the academic programs for nursing, dentistry, and medicine and of collecting the history of related programs that preceded or were incorporated into the University of Louisville. The Kornhauser Health Sciences Library collection provides access to formal class photographs, images of students, buildings, classrooms, and laboratories, and early medical school catalogs. Together, these materials serve as a resource into the history of the health-related programs and people of the University of Louisville. Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing Records The Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing Records digital collection includes selected photographs documenting the activities and students of the School of Nursing from the early 1900s through approximately 1964 (107 items). The complete Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing Records collection (1886-1996), RG117, contains artifacts, student records, correspondence, manuals, oral histories, and other documents. These non-digitized materials are available in-person at the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library. University of Louisville School of Dentistry The University of Louisville School of Dentistry collection contains class photographs and images of students, classrooms, and laboratories from the Louisville College of Dentistry and University of Louisville School of Dentistry. The photographs are from approximately 1892-1960 (54 items). University of Louisville School of Medicine Catalogs The University of Louisville School of Medicine Catalogs collection from 1837-1910 (142 items) includes school catalogs announcing upcoming sessions and listing current students. Also included are alumni lists, a history of the medical school, and additional lectures. University of Louisville School of Medicine Class Photographs, pre-1923 The University of Louisville School of Medicine Class Photographs, pre-1923 collection (59 items) includes class photographs from the medical programs for University of Louisville, Hospital College of Medicine, Kentucky School of Medicine, Kentucky University Medical Department, Louisville Medical College, and Louisville Hospital College of Medicine from approximately 1870-1922. A database of medical school graduates (1838-1908) for students from the Hospital College of Medicine, Kentucky School of Medicine, Kentucky University Medical Department, Louisville Medical College, and the University of Louisville is available through Kornhauser Library. Technical Information Each image was scanned as a 600 ppi, 24-bit RGB TIFF file, at 6000 pixels on the long side. Emily Symonds converted and uploaded the images as lossy JPEG2000 files of maximum quality using CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software. Before being converted into JPEG2000 files, the Medical School catalogs were reduced to 6000 pixels on the long side using IrfanView. Metadata for the collection was created in accordance with the University of Louisville Digital Initiatives data dictionary (PDF) . Titles supplied by the cataloger have been noted in the Description field. The medical school catalogs were uploaded using OCR, or Optical Character Recognition, which allows for full-text searching of the catalog pages. Searching for People Whenever possible, individuals in the photographs, especially class photographs, are identified in the People Pictured field of the record. The most complete form of the name is listed in this field. When looking for a specific person, alternate forms and spellings may also need to be searched. This is due to variants in spelling, legibility, and typography across the collections. For the Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing Records, personal names were matched with lists of graduating students for each class year. Students from each graduating class who were in the class lists are also identified in the Description field. For the University of Louisville School of Medicine Class Photographs, pre-1923 collection, personal names were matched with the names in the medical school graduates database . Faculty names were matched with biography and personnel files held by University Archives & Records Center .
