About - Northwest Folklife Digital Collection The Archives of Northwest Folklore recently partnered with the UO Libraries to begin the development of a digital library collection of folklore materials drawn from fieldwork collections in the Archives of Northwest Folklore. The project team decided to begin with the Oregon Arts Commission's Folk Art of the Oregon Country project records, a collection of 7,000 slides that document folk artists and folk art in cultural communities across Oregon in 1979. Archives of Northwest Folklore student archivists and volunteers have scanned 2,500 slides using equipment in the UO Libraries’ Visual Resources Center. Student archivists annotated images with descriptions provided by fieldworkers and assigned subject headings from the Ethnographic Thesaurus, a vocabulary developed by the American Folklore Society to improve access to information about folklore, ethnomusicology, cultural anthropology, and related fields. The images from the Folk Art of the Oregon Country project will form the foundation for a larger, digital collection of regional, folklore fieldwork materials. The digital library collection will be hosted by the UO Libraries, made available to the public through the Libraries’ web site, and indexed in the UO Library Catalog and OCLC WorldCat. A finding aid for the collection will be published in the Northwest Digital Archives, a database of guides to primary sources in the Northwest, facilitating the discovery of collection contents through internet search engines.
